GLAS 2016-17   ~   A Grove of Native Trees                              Updated: 9th February 2018

To create pocket habitats for plants & animals, promoting our native biodiversity and enhancing the landscape

1)  Plant a grove of trees in a single location on the farm
2)  The grove must be at least 0.05hectares (250 trees) and not larger than 0.09 hectare (450 trees)
3)  Trees to be planted in rows 2 metres apart with 1 metre between each tree within each row
4)  Trees must be native species from native seed and the grove must include at least two different species.
5)  The grove must be fenced to protect from livestock and kept clean of competing vegetation

Future Forests has promoted the planting of native Irish trees for over 25 years.
We are registered & inspected by DAFM and approved by GLAS for this scheme.
Provenance Declaration forms certifying that trees are from native indigenous seed will be supplied with all orders
This season we can offer the following Native Trees grown from native indigenous seed as bare-root plants:
  Common Alder   (Alnus glutinosa)          
Fast growing, nitrogen fixing tree suitable for less fertile & poorly drained sites. Provides valuable shelter and coppices freely

   Birch, Downey   (Betula pubescens)  
           Very similar to Silver Birch but more tolerant of damp acidic soil.

   Mountain Ash / Rowan   (Sorbus aucuparia)  
           Small, hardy tree suitable for exposed sites tolerating both acid and alkaline soil. Spring flowers & red berries in autumn.

Future Forests also supplies other Native Trees ~ Alder Buckthorn, Wild Cherry, Silver Birch, Hazel, Common & Sessile Oak, Native Willows, Scots Pine, Yew etc but either these species are not eligible for the current GLAS scheme or we have yet to source plants with the required seed provenance certification.
We also supply a wide variety of non native trees including many e.g. Beech that have naturalised well in Ireland
